Importance of National Education
“National Education must be a vital component of our education process. National Education goes beyond book knowledge. It is an exercise to develop instincts that become part of the psyche of every child. It must engender a shared sense of nationhood, an understanding of how our past is relevant to our present and future. It must appeal to both heart and mind.”
Excerpt from Mr Goh Chok Tong’s Teachers’ Day Rally Speech on Sept 9 1996
“Our schools play a key role in helping new generations of Singaporeans thrive, and shape social norms that will keep Singapore secure and cohesive in a constantly changing future. They have to open the minds of their students to the rich expanse of possibilities in the world around us. They should nurture an ability to think originally, and to take the initiative. And, most importantly, they have to help their students develop strength of character – the ability to face up to difficulties, fight as a team, and lead. They must groom citizens who are keen to contribute to the well-being of fellow citizens. Singaporeans who will push the boundaries of achievement, not just to enjoy life’s comforts, but so that we can enhance the lives of others, and leave something behind to enrich future generations.”
Excerpt from Speech by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Acting Minister for Education, at the Opening Ceremony of the Redeveloped Campus of Presbyterian High School ( Friday, 14 May 2004) on Developing Strength of Character and Discipline

| Learning Journeys |
All students |
This programme enables students to visit various organizations (both public and private installations, local and overseas) to better understand how Singapore had overcome her constraints to achieve world-class standing, and to take pride in her achievements. The concept, “Learning Journeys” is to emphasise that every trip out of the school is an important learning experience, essential and integral to the educational process and not a one-off event. A learning journey can maximize the learning experience for our students. They can make an impact in shaping the lifelong interests of a child, and start him on the road to lifelong learning on a subject which captures his imagination, fascinates him.
|
| Community Involvement Programme |
All students |
This programme aims to nurture students to be socially responsible and to help them understand that every Singaporean has a role enhancing the well-being of the community and the country. It has been made compulsory for all to ensure that every student will be given an opportunity to be involved in community work.

Every year on 15 February, the day Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942, Singapore commemorates Total Defence Day to remind Singaporeans that everyone has a part to play in defending our country. In 2009, we will be commemorating 25 years of Total Defence with a key difference. Instead of suggesting to Singaporeans how they should think about the five aspects of Total Defence, the 2009 Total Defence outreach will revolve around a central question - What will you defend?
Let us dig deep within ourselves, and reflect on what it is in Singapore that we hold most dear in life, what it is that we will strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis. It may be something connected to our personal passion, or our closest friends and loved ones. It could be a physical item of sentimental worth like old photos, something abstract like the core value of sincere friendship, or just people we cherish.
In doing so, the various Total Defence outreach activities will drive home the theme of "It's Personal. Play Your Part", by providing the people of Singapore with opportunities to reflect on the relevance of Total Defence to their personal lives, and understand that everyone has a part to play.
So, express yourself and share with us: What will you defend?

Since its inception in 1984, Total Defence has been adopted as the way Singaporeans come together to respond to challenges and build a strong society and nation. In commemorating 25 years of Total Defence, the logo has been given a tweak to stay in tune with a more modern feel while retaining its familiar identity. The tagline "It's Personal. Play your Part." is in a handwritten font that emphasises the personal nature of our involvement in Total Defence, reminding Singaporeans that everyone has a role in protecting the Singaporean way of life. The rounder edges of the logo give it a softer touch, reflecting the personal stake in Total Defence and encouraging Singaporeans to embrace Total Defence in their daily lives.

Five Pillars, One Roof brings together some of Singapore’s leading theatrical talents and performers from the three main segments of society - the people, private and public sectors - to commemorate 25 years of Total Defence in an original, heartwarming and entertaining Singaporean musical revue.
Written and directed by Jonathan Lim and Bang Wenfu of Chestnuts fame, the musical revue pieces together stories, dreams and the day-to-day concerns of a group of Singaporeans who are neighbours in a typical housing estate.
Told through music and songs that span several decades, their experiences bring the different generations together - from the memories of the early days of Singapore as remembered by an elderly pair of neighbours to the frank realities of modern living as experienced by a yuppie couple; from the challenges facing National Service boys to the visions of the future of our children. This portrays the relevance of Total Defence in the past, present and future.
Familiar Singaporean issues such as the cost of living, the rat race, National Service and racial harmony become lenses through which we view the importance of Total Defence.
Five Pillars, One Roof was staged at TD25 Day on 15 February 2009 at the Suntec City Tropics Atrium. Watch it now in 3 parts!
