IT Enrichment for pupils
What is IT?
IT refers to Information & Communication Technology, sometimes also abbreviated as ICT. Many of the skills of Information Technology are important aspects of Information Literacy, which refers to the ability to know how information is organised, to find information and use it effectively.
The viewpoint taken in this course is that young people are active participants in the process of developing their own personal understandings of the world, a viewpoint often called "Constructivism". The teacher's job includes providing suitable conditions and tools for learning to occur. Learning can be promoted by setting up situations in which ideas are communicated and shared between students and between students and teachers. Information Technology can provide a variety of ways for encouraging and enabling this communication; it can give a variety of different approaches to cater for students' different learning styles; it can be motivating.
In a society in which the we are bombarded with information in a plethora of forms, often electronic, it is important that students learn the skills of discriminating between the useful and the not useful, of selecting the important information and processing it to create meaning; that is, knowledge.
Aims: We aim to provide our pupils with the opportunity to develop IT skills, which will enhance their learning and prepare them to participate in a rapidly changing technological world. We wish to enable our pupils to understand both the capabilities and limitations of IT, and use this knowledge to decide when and where to use IT to best effect. Through the use of IT we aim to provide pupils with greater opportunities to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information.
Objectives:
Knowledge of IT is becoming an increasingly important life skill. As a school we recognise our role in developing our pupils as ‘lifelong learners' to enable them to make the most of their future. To this end, our objective is that the pupils at Bukit View Secondary School shall be given the opportunity to:
- Examine and discuss their experience of IT and look at its use and value in the outside world.
- Develop independence in the use and operation of both software and hardware.
- Work independently and co-operatively, so developing the necessary personal and social skills.
- Develop skills and ideas in organising information, sequencing instructions, monitoring and controlling events and exploring simulations.
