In Bukit View Secondary School (BVSS), Design & Technology (D&T) is part of a holistic broad-based education. Through it we aim to:
• develop students to be self-motivated and to think creatively and critically.
• promote design awareness and appreciation among students.
• help pupils acquire knowledge and skills in design and technologies for possible
careers in these fields of study.
Our D&T curriculum comprises both lower and upper secondary. The lower secondary D&T is a compulsory coursework-based subject while that in the upper secondary is an elective subject to cater to the interest and aptitude of students who choose to pursue D&T at a higher level.
Both the lower and upper secondary syllabus comprises two components, the written Examination (30%) and the coursework: the design process in solving a design problem as documented in a design journal and presentation boards, and the making of the final model/product (70%).
For the Written Examination, students are required to show their knowledge and understanding of Design and application of simple Technologies. Students will be expected to call upon the experience of designing via the design process-in-action.
For the coursework component, students are assessed based on:
• the extent and quality of research.
• the ability to plan.
• execute and monitor the progress of the Design Project.
• the ability to record critical information.
• identify situations, investigate needs.
• idea conceptualization and development showing creative and analytical
thoughts in response to the need being addressed.
• quality of the design proposal.
• overall practical skills management in the resolution of artifact.

Mr Yeo Cher Hock conducted a sharing on the design process in relation to our practice in the national examination coursework for several teachers from schools of another cluster from the South Zone in Mar 2011. Mr Sirajutheen S Hameed and Mr Wai Kam Hoa shared at the annual national D&T Conference on ‘Study Trip To Australia’in March 08. Mr Wai Kam Hoa shared at the Cluster Synergy Conference on ‘Pull Out Programme For High Ability Pupils’ in Aug 08.
Sec 3 students went through a 10 hours sketching and ideation workshop conducted by Design Rete in March 2011. This was followed by the 5 days 'Pull-Out Prgramme' conducted by lecturers from the school of Product Design and Innovation, Ngee Ann Polytechnic during the June holidays.
A learning journey was conducted for Sec 3 pupils to the design studio of Design Rete where they observed the working environment of professional designers. A sharing session was also conducted on ideation methods as well as current design issues such as gerontology.
Learning Journey by Bukit View Primary School
We played host to pupils from Bukit View Primary School who visited our D&T workshop. We shared with them what the subject entails as well as our students' work and the various tools , equipment and processes that is a part of what they learn in the subject.
Sec 2 Programme 2012
Revision to the programme will involve a learning journey to a different place of interest for students to identify design opportunities for their coursework. Enhancements are also made to help students analyse more effectively and write better specifications for their design proposal.
