ART : An Overview

There must be a belief that ALL students can do ART. Art is no longer just about drawing and painting. At this foundation level, besides identifying talented students with artistic skills, our main focus is to convince that being exposed to different artistic experiences is crucial to survival in this day and age of visuals and images.

Students’ acquisition of Visual Literacy is measured through their artistic processes, responses and attitudes towards not only their own artmaking but others as well.

Lessons are designed to maximise a diversity of learning and sensory experiences where opportunities are created for the students to engage, make sense of and connect meanings to the visuals and images around them. These are achieved through a more critical approach incorporating higher order thinking skills, which includes theory sessions in art history and critical appreciation as well as through practical work.

These artistic processes will equip students with lifelong learning skills in having to cope and survive in this age of manipulated visuals. Students will be able to discern, communicate and make informed judgements pertaining to implications and interpretations of these imageries, be they in still forms or moving visuals.

ART CRITICISM & APPRECIATION (ALL LEVELS)

All students are exposed to these sessions on a regular basis. They can air their views on either peers’ works as well as works of artists.

For Sec. 1s, our focus is on Western Art - e.g. Cave Art, Renaissance, Impressionism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Modern/Contemporary Art

For Sec. 2s, we look at Southeast Asian Art with a focus on our own Singapore Pioneer Artists and their Nanyang style.

The Upper Sec. students will be exposed to the Singapore Art Museum resource kit as well as photography works such Dorothea Lange, sculptural forms such as Christo's and our very own durian-like structure - The Esplanade.

Using a structured approach such as Feldman’s Model, students can apply these skills in reading and understanding images during any subjects such as for a language oral Assessment.

ASSESSMENT

SECONDARY 1s AND 2s

All art assignments are considered as Continual Assessment

Each assignment are divided into:

  • Creativity / Surprise Factor
  • Quality
  • Reflection/Artist Statement

Based on students’ response towards the numerous art criticism sessions that are incorporated into lessons, end-of-year exams will continue to be a 40% theory paper and 60% pencil drawing of redesigning the composition of an image.

The assessment rubric will also attempt to accommodate students’ different skills and abilities.

The 60% drawing component is divided into 3 categories:

Quality of drawing (25%)

Creativity & Surprise Factor (25%)

Artist Statement (10%)

In view of the learning outcomes for lower secondary levels, where the focus is on the acquisition of visual literacy, and not technical competency, the work-in-progress assessment and allowing for flexible mode of expressions for selected topics are more effective and constructive in measuring students’ differing levels of abilities and competencies.

Students are made aware that ART is related to all other subjects and disciplines.

For example, in 2007 all Sec 2 students research on IMF/World Bank Groups Conference to be held in Singapore, as well as its cultural event, Singapore Biennale. Students are made to understand the economic, social, cultural & political impacts these events have on Singapore. In 2009, we focus on Olympism Education in conjunction with YOG2010.

Therefore lessons are designed with these in mind:

- Made aware to students current events and development of art and design locally and globally

- Design lessons that are relevant and relate to students’ real life experiences

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR LOWER SECONDARY

  • UNDERSTANDING AND APPLICATION OF ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ART & DESIGN
  • ABILITY TO RESPOND TO & VERBALLY ARTICULATE ABOUT ARTWORKS (SOVA)
  • ACQUISITION OF VISUAL LITERACY THROUGH FINE ARTS
  • ACQUISITION OF DIGITAL LITERACY THROUGH DESIGN TASKS USING MULTI-MEDIA PLATFORMS SUCH AS DIGITAL IMAGING, ANIMATION (2D & 3D) AND VIDEO
  • AWARENESS OF CURRENT TRENDS IN THE ARTS, DESIGN AND DIGITAL MEDIA
