Overview Computer Studies is a new subject offered in Singapore government schools since 2006. BVSS is one of only 5 schools that offer this subject at GCE O Level. It is offered as one of the subjects combinations for our Upper Secondary Express students.

On this page, you will find a brief description of the subject as well as detailed syllabus and sample question papers with answers. Exam Format Computer Studies consists of one written examination paper and a coursework project. Paper 1 (worth 75% of the total marks) is 2.5 hours in length and consists of short-answer and structured questions with no choice. Paper 2 (worth 25% of the total marks) is a coursework project of a substantial nature carried out over an extended period. The project gives students the opportunity to find a computer-based solution to a significant problem and carry it through to a successful conclusion. It is assessed by our school and is moderated by CIE. Candidates are assessed on knowledge and understanding, problem solving and realisation, and communication.  Lesson Format 5 periods per week:
- 2 periods of theory lessons in classroom
- 3 periods of practical work in computer lab
 Syllabus Summary The CS syllabus consists of 5 main sections: 1. Applications of computers and their social and economic implications
- how computers are used in banks, schools, libraries, hospitals, etc.
- where possible, site visits will be conducted
2. Systems analysis
- use charts and diagrams to define problems, study feasibility, investigate and find facts.
3. Problem solution, including algorithm design and programming concepts
- pupils will be taught computer programming skills in Visual Basic.
4. Generic software and the organisation of data
- Use of application softwares like MSWord, Excel, Database, Computer Aided Design, Desktop Publishing, multimedia, data logging, communications and webpage design.
5. Hardware, systems and communications.
- Learn about the different terms and names used in computing.
- Identify the use of microprocessors in everyday objects such as cameras, microwave ovens, digital watches, etc.
- Learn about different types of computer system such as network systems, multimedia and automated systems.
